Cinematheque VancouverIt’s been over a week since I took part in this delightful event put on by the Cinematheque and I can easily say it took me a good few days to catch up on sleep! Introduced two years ago this is only the second time they have put on this event so I felt it was good timing I happened to be here and was meant to be! Once I heard about it I thought I just have to do it. With a line up of 15 films, that of which you are not told, the event kicked off at 10am and would run for a full 24 hrs with a few breaks in between. I had only bought my ticket the night before and didn’t realise it started at 9.30 with a talk so arrived pretty much smack on 10 and the film was already in its opening credits. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the day, just that there was a theme (again not disclosed) and we would discover this theme as we watched the films.

24 hour Movie Marathon timetable Cinematheque

My crumpled timetable

The opening film was Groundhog Day, which although I have seen countless number of times, still works its magic. I’m used to watching this film around Christmas time so felt quite strange watching it in a dark room on a sunny morning in March but what the heck I still enjoyed it! The second film of the day was a little gem, Chris Marker’s La Jette, a film which many Sci Fi films have since been based on. Only 28 minutes long the film is made up entirely of black and white still photographs with voiceover and tells the story of Scientists who decide to send a man into the past to try to prevent the nuclear war that has almost destroyed the earth and threatens to annihilate the human race. This was the only non feature  length film of the night and definitely left an impression on many people. Third up it was the wonderful Hitchcock film Rope which was probably one of my favourites of the day. Again I had seen this before back in A level Media Studies however it still felt so fresh and new and has one of my favourite actors in, James Stewart who as always was fantastic. I loved that the camera never pauses and follows the action of the whole event as if you are in the theatre watching a play. Some shots were executed wonderfully such as the shot of the door swinging open and dropping the rope into the drawer. His films are completely timeless. Continue reading →

Chinese New Year Vancouver Year of the goatBefore I flew out to Vancouver I read that the Chinese New Year Parade would be taking place on Sunday 22nd February which left me very excited! There had been build up events and stalls spread across town to mark the year of the goat/lamb (this didn’t seem to be clear!) Some signs said it was the year of the goat whereas others said lamb and therefore there was a big display of lambs at one of the exhibition areas and then random posters of goats at other parts. The festival kicked off at 11a.m and if there’s one word to sum it up I would say disappointing. It seemed quite badly organised and was really long that it grew quite tiresome. It didn’t seem extremely professional and at one point there was a worker walking down the parade smoking and just having a general chat on the phone. I do not mean to take this away from some of the beautiful costumes on display as well as the drums and people dressed up as dragons as this was impressive, however the whole thing together did not not flow smoothly and after 20 minutes of watching we grew bored and headed elsewhere.

Apartments in Vancouver So I’ve been here just over a week and can safely say I’ve found a room in a good part of town which is a nice room however I wish I had taken a little bit longer to work out prices and best places to live around Vancouver. I’d read a lot about the different places, asked friends also and had a lot of recommendations so I wanted to explore the different options. Here’s a few I looked into but there’s a good site which gives tips on prices and what you can find in each neighbourhood here.

Kitsilano is a beautiful part of Vancouver. About 20 minutes bus ride from Downtown it has a lovely homely feel and beautiful beaches. On West 4th avenue there is a long stream of shops, restaurants, coffee shops and again a good ol’ Whole Foods Market. Kits is a little bit upmarket but it is where University of British Columbia is located so quite often you can look for a room at the University Campus.

Kitsilano Beach

West Vancouver is known as the ‘Chelsea of Vancouver’. It is very upmarket with beautiful houses, most with swimming pools and several bedrooms and is where a lot of professionals live. Again you can catch a bus ride to West Vancouver from Downtown  which takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Continue reading →

I’m feeling much more settled and am really enjoying being here. The first two days weren’t easy. On Friday night I was messaging people back home to say I’d made the wrong decision and I should just come straight back. However after having a few days exploring, meeting people and discovering places I’d have to say the place is growing on me. Of course, I’m not working yet so everything is going to be painted a bit rosy but I hope that even when I do start my job I will still be able to explore this beautiful city. Continue reading →

Downtown VancouverLove Eat LiveWell it’s been a long time getting here and now I finally am it still doesn’t quite seem real! It’s all quite daunting moving to a new place by yourself but it’s still early days yet so I’ll see how I feel in a couple of days time! The last few days since leaving work went far too quickly, it dawned on me that I had a lot to do and not as much time as I thought to do it in! The weekend was spent with loved ones. I was treated extremely special on Saturday with a full blown 3 course meal by Craig and he also gave me a beautiful travel journal to take with me. Continue reading →

This time next week I’ll be in Vancouver!

Vancouver at NightIt’s only 3 days until I fly off to Vancouver and I can definitely say that the last two weeks have been a roller coaster of emotions! Since handing my notice in at work, my head has been backwards and forwards wondering if I’ve made the right decision, questioning why I’ve been wanting to try moving to Vancouver for a period of time and second guessing quite a lot. At the same time 2015 has also been scary but exciting, liberating and full of incredible moments spent with loved ones and friends that i have appreciated more than I think I would’ve done if I did not have this trip planned.

I think the worries I’m having at the moment are down to the realisation that this is actually happening! I’ve talked about it for so long and now that I’m actually doing it I’m not quite believing I am going. I also still feel quite underprepared since I have not been taking any time to sit down and do stuff but rather I’ve been having a wonderful time out and about constantly, seeing friends, going for drinks and just spending my time anywhere other than sitting down at home with my computer and mapping out where it is I want to stay and what I will be doing.
I have made some enquiries regarding work and have a few people to meet up with when I arrive which is a positive but the worries such as, will my bank card work ok? Will I be able to find a flat share easily enough? What happens if I get to the border and they don’t let me enter do stop me from feeling as excited as I could be at this point! I suppose this lack of sitting down and planning has meant I haven’t been allowing myself to get as excited as I want to be because I am still clinging on to what I have here and am scared of leaping into the unknown. At the same time, what people keep telling me and what I really do need to keep telling myself is that, I am so fortunate to be doing this, to be able to follow a dream that I have wanted to do for such a long time. Even if I go for 3 months and decide I miss Craig too much or that Vancouver just isn’t for me I can always come back but this experience is one that I can keep with me for the rest of my life and I need to try looking forward and not back.

Summer Mediterranean Delight at Pera

mix vegertable mezze pera (1012x720)Pera (1024x576)If you’re in the mood for a varied Mediterranean menu then look no further than Pera in London. Situated on Upper Street between Angel station and Highbury and Islington Pera is a delightful restaurant, especially in Summer as they open out the front doors so you can sit and enjoy a glass of wine whilst watching the busy people of London pass you buy.

I discovered Pera when searching for a restaurant that accepted Tastecard and straight away the restaurant stood out as it had top marks and a high number of fantastic reviews. Mediterranean food is one of my favourite cuisines and after having a peep at the menu and seeing they had such a varied menu I was excited to head down and try it out.

The restaurant is decorated beautifully with it’s wooden decor, little trinkets and big open window section which lets you sit out the front. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful in providing suggestions on what to eat. Craig was set on the lamb cutlets which were glazed in a honey and oregano sauce served with sautéed potato and we both wanted to try the mix vegetable mezze. I couldn’t decide what to have and finally opted for the chicken shish however, when we went to order we were informed that with a tastecard you are only entitled to 2 starters and 2 mains. That wasn’t a problem as it meant we could try even more dishes. As we were getting the mezze main to share I decided to mix two starters as a main and opted for the grilled mixed sausage skewer and the goats cheese served on bed of mix leaves topped with caramelized red onion and smoked red pepper. The sausage skewer consisted of chorizo, cumberland sausage and Sucuk (Turkish sausage) served with mix leaves and toasted baguette. The portion was a little on the small side however  the taste was very good and before the starters we were given freshly baked pitta which came in handy to have with the sausages plus I then had a big size portion of goats cheese and salad.

goats cheese with salad and caramelized onionsIt was bread overload by the time our mix vegetable mezze platter arrived which consisted of Humus, cacik, smoked aubergine with yogurt, ezme salad (chilli tomato onion cucumber salsa), ratatouille served with pitta. The ratatouille and smoked aubergine were the highlights to this dish as they were flavoursome without being too oily, I have had aubergine before and found it can sometimes repeat on you if there is too much oil. Craig’s lamb cutlets were extremely tender and the honey sauce was sweet and addictive, I kept dipping my pitta bread in it to soak it all up.

mix vegetable mezze (1024x576)

We were heading to the cinema after and were pushed for time however when I next go back I will most certainly get dessert, the cakes looked incredible. I would say it’s worth even just going in to Pera to get a cake which are kept behind a glass counter as you go to pay (good bit of marketing there as I was super tempted just to pick one up for the road).

Good value for money, lovely staff and delicious food Pera is extremely reasonable (especially if you have tastecard) and will leave you full and satisfied and most likely coming back again.

Cafe Pacifico

Cafe Pacifico

I’d never heard of Cafe Pacifico until last week but now I’m so glad I have. A Mexican restaurant situated in the heart of Covent Garden, just near Pineapple studios and next to Foundation Bar, Cafe Pacifico is London’s first Mexican cantina and opened back in 1982. Serving a selection of modern and authentic mexican food cafe it’s easy to see why it was packed out even on a Wednesday evening. Thanks to the lovely people at Zomato I was fortunate to head down to Cafe Pacifico and sample some of their cocktails and delicious food. Continue reading →

Mediterranean Dish for Mother’s Day -Tzatziki, Griddled Chicken & Quinoa Greek Salad

Griddled Chicken & Quinoa Greek Salad

Griddled Chicken & Quinoa Greek Salad

I don’t know about you but I have a mum who doesn’t like to sit down. Up at the early hours of dawn she’s already washed the floors, put up the lunches, done the washing and this is all done before the clocks have even struck 7a.m.  What can I say, she likes to keep busy but more than that it’s keeping on top of things. I think I’ve inherited this from her to an extent in that I do like to keep busy and find I can only fully relax when I’ve done a lot with my day. Therefore to celebrate Mother’s Day I wanted to do something special and decided I would cook for her.

I’ve always remembered her saying she enjoys Greek and Mediterranean food after her first proper holiday in Cyprus a few years back where it was all you can eat every night and she absolutely loved it. One of her best friends was married to a Greek man too and she picked up some lovely recipes from them especially Greek potatoes! We always have these on a special occasion in our house because they are delicious but not the healthiest potatoes for you as you have to soak them in quite a lot of vegetable oil, however every now and then doesn’t hurt!

I absolutely love Greek food too and discovered some of the most delicious dishes on a holiday with Craig to Kefalonia last year. Not only was the scenery breath-taking and the people so friendly and accommodating but the food was something else. Kefalonia pie, Moussaka, beef stifado, I was completely in my element and would easily go back simply just for the food.

Therefore with this in mind I decided to go for a Mediterranean theme for dinner tonight and chose to make tzatziki with pitta to start followed by Griddled chicken, quinoa Greek salad and rosemary potatoes to follow.

For the tzatziki I followed Nigel Slater’s recipe and was pleasantly surprised at how simple it was to make. All you need is:

Ingredients:

1 Cucumber
Olive oil
Yogurt (preferably goat’s or sheep’s, strained) I couldn’t get this so used Greek natural yoghurt
2 Crushed garlic
Dill or mint
Lemon juice
A little salt

Find the right exercise for you!

25 Saturday Jan 2014

beat january blues, dancing and exercise, fun exercise, healthy body and weight, healthy mentality, hobbies, latin soul academy, lose weight in a fun way, my fitness pal, ravercise

So it’s getting closer to the end of January and has there been any progress in my goals? Hmm well the healthy eating has improved. I haven’t yet managed to try out the 5.2, ok that’s I lie I did try it but found it quite difficult. 500 calories for a whole day, I have at least 300 in my porridge and that’s only for breakfast, never mind my constant snacking for granola and fruit, I’ve already gone over 500 before it hits 11a.m. So with the lack of willpower for the 5.2 I’ve been using an app on my phone called  My Fitness Pal. It’s a great way to keep track of what you’re eating every day and allows you to see how long it will take for you to reach your goal weight taking in the amount you eat on a particular day.

To begin you register and type in your current weight and then the weight you want to be. The app calculates how many calories you can consume each day in order to reach that weight in a particular time. Say for example you wanted to lose 7 pounds in two weeks it would calculate that you probably need to eat 350 calories a day so it’s important to be sensible in trying to achieve your target weight. I have given myself 6 weeks to lose 7 pounds which means I am allowed 1,200 calories per day.

The first week went really well, however there have been some days where I have clearly gone over, Rum Kitchen, accounting for one and other nights out that involved alcohol. I must admit it has been hard because I simply love food and going out however the real factor for why I haven’t lost any weight is because I’m not eating three substantial meals rather I pick quite a lot throughout the day. Therefore from this week I am going to aim to have three substantial healthy meals per day and try not to pick at other things, especially granola, at certain times, usually when I’m bored or craving something sweet.

On the other hand, I have been exercising more, in fact I ordered some snazzy pair of crazy bright pink  Nike trainers online the other day that magically fit and last Thursday I went to my first Ravercise class. If you haven’t tried this, it’s a must! A high intensity workout accompanied by a live DJ, Ravercise takes place every Monday and Thursday night on the second floor of Mother Bar in Shoreditch. My friend Leah saw an offer for two ravercise classes for £10 on living social and bought them straight away. We had been looking to get involved in a fun exercise class for the New Year that wasn’t too expensive so this worked out perfectly. Without the living social deal the classes are normally £11 so it’s definitely worth looking out for the offers.  The moves aren’t too hard to follow, it’s mainly a lot of jumping around with moves like running man and punching which definitely get your heart beat racing. The highlight for me was when Joe, the dance instructor shouted out at the end, “Get ready for the freestyle” and suddenly a smoke machine went into full blast hazing up the room and one of the djs picked up the microphone and started MCing. It was brilliant; everyone was just going a bit mental and pulling all sorts of moves out for show! The one downfall about the place, not the class, high ratings for the class, rather we decided to go for a diet coke (keeping in with the ‘healthy’ theme) and were absolutely shocked to be given a can of diet coke in a plastic cup for £2.20! 2.20?! I think I might just pop to Sainsbury’s next time.

Other than Ravercise, I’ve got back into going zumba a bit. The best Zumba class I have ever come across is Latin Soul Academy. The music is amazing, there are three main dance teachers but on a Saturday it is normally run by Freddie who is an incredible dancer and super fun. He encourages all the 50 women in the big hall at Compton School to shake their butts like crazy and sing along to the songs. Whenever I go to his classes, I am always smiling because although quite tough at times, his classes are more fun than hard work and I love seeing so many women all together just busting their moves and having some time to themselves on a Saturday morning. Zumba Fitness run several classes throughout the week and in two weeks’ time are doing a 3 hours dance extravaganza which will definitely work up a sweat.

zumba card gift

So despite not losing the weight, yet, I have not giving up hope. My main focus is to feel fit and healthy and I think I’m on a good road towards that.

With regards to reading, I’ve been getting inspired by other blogs, particular food ones, I especially like Ren Behan’s blog  who has had several recipes published in magazines such as BBC Good Food and Delicious and  I’ve also downloaded a couple of books on my kindle which I will make sure I read.

So despite last Monday being pinpointed Blue Monday and the most depressing day of the year, it really doesn’t have to be.  Tomorrow is another day and a brand new day to start get inspired with exciting things. I’ve got pizza on the agenda for dinner tonight and a few drinks to follow, might not exactly tie in with healthy eating plans but as I said one day off won’t hurt, just get back on track tomorrow.
