beautiful tulipsI have been saying I will go to Columbia Road flower market for probably the best part of a year however for some reason or another haven’t ventured out- probably due to being lazy on a Sunday morning and wanting to stay in with a cup of tea and a paper (how old am I?!). However this morning with the sun shining I decided there was no excuse and waking up before 9 a.m I decided I would go.

Open every Sunday from 8a.m to 3p.m, Columbia Rd market will still be on even if the rain is pouring from the skies! Luckily for me it was a lovely day and I found it pretty easily too as, after getting off at Old Street station, I just followed the direction that several people carrying big beautiful bunches of flowers were coming from. I saw so many people with flowers in their hands I worried I would get there and there wouldn’t be many left however I needn’t have worried as when I arrived the place was absolutely buzzing and there was a large selection of flower stalls. It was so busy at times I could barely move but I didn’t really mind as like everyone else I just got caught up with looking around at all the flowers. Sunflowers and hydrangeas proved popular and there were so many different coloured roses from baby pink to midnight blue as well as orchids and flower buds. A band played at either end of the market and there are a selection of shops and cafes on either side of the market to pop in to too. My favourites were Vintage heaven & cakehole (perfect for picking up a tea set) and the old fashioned style pic n mix store Suck & chew (shock horror!).

BircherHealthy BircherBirchers have become a bit of an addiction for me at the moment and also my Friday morning treat. As much as I love trying out new recipes and different cuisines when I get hold of something I like I become a bit of a creature habit and I can return to it again and again. Examples of this have included the roasted vegetable cous cous from M&S (honestly if it’s not on the shelf when I’ve set my mind on having it for lunch I spend about an hour deciding on something else) as well as recently the goats cheese bakes from Sainsburys (probably not the healthiest of dinner options but so simple) and now after discovering Pret’s bircher I have become addicted! It really is such a treat and when I have it I just feel all happy because it’s delicious yet good for you at the same time and fills me right up.

So, after buying the bircher approximately 11 times and still not growing tired of it but rather thinking I’ve started spending more money than I normally would on breakfast I thought to myself it might be a good thing to save some money and try and make my own version. Turns out it’s pretty simple to do. All you need is:

Sweet potato brownies (2)

Sweet potato brownies

So I’ve only recently discovered the blog Deliciously Ella and fell in love straight away with the beautiful photography, delicious looking food and therefore seeing as the brownies looked to be one of the more popular recipes I thought what better way to spend a Sunday than trying out a new recipe!

When it comes to brownies I must admit I can pretty much eat a lot of them. There are always new ones to try from crunchie, marble to snickers (yum that was a good one at BBC Good food festival) and so with my new found love for vegetables in baking and my addiction to sweet potato fries at the moment I was quite excited to see what it would be like to test this brownie recipe out.

The ingredients at first proved a bit tricky for me to find. If I had prepared myself and taken a trip to Planet Organic, I might have been a little bit more successful. However, I wasn’t sensible enough and was left with simply a Sainsbury’s or M & S to choose from and unfortunately neither one had the buckwheat flour which left me opting for rice flour.

Staying positive I went in search for the raw cacao and couldn’t get hold of that either so normal cocoa powder it was! Turns out rice flour in brownies might not be the answer to delicious brownies. I also think following cup measurements probably didn’t agree with me as although I converted them according to a website that helps you convert tricky things like this, perhaps I went a little off the mark. The recipe is simple enough to follow and the brownies baked in the time said, however the taste of them didn’t turn out as I was hoping for. Rather than the, ‘wow these are a million times better than chocolate brownies’ reaction it was a strong case of silent chewing followed by my boyfriend pretty much trying to swallow with a look of pain on his face. In my case the initial brownie didn’t taste as good as I was hoping but funnily enough I didn’t find the aftertaste all too bad and opted for another (part of this might have been due to the fact that I hate to waste food but all the same at least they got eaten).

Therefore moral of the story here is that following a given recipe is a good thing to do however don’t be disheartened if it doesn’t go to plan- recipes are for trying and testing and I will try and bake these again. The idea of a healthy yet delicious brownie sounds right up my street so I won’t give up on this recipe yet- I’ll just buy the right ingredients next time! Happy Baking!

Ingredients (I’ve used Delia’s lovely online converter to convert cups into grams which I hope helps)

Makes 10 brownies

2 medium to large sweet potatoes

2/3 of a cup of ground almonds/ 250g

1/2 a cup of buckwheat flour (brown rice flour will also work) / 75g

14 medjool dates

4 tablespoons of raw cacao

3 tablespoons of pure maple syrup

a pinch of salt

001 (1024x683)

Method (taken from Deliciously Ella’s blog):

1) Pre-heat the oven to 180C/gas mark 4, then peel the sweet potatoes. Cut them into chunks and place into a steamer for about  twenty minutes, until they become really soft.

2) Once they are perfectly soft and beginning to fall apart remove them and add them to a food processor with the pitted dates – this will form one of the sweetest, creamiest, most delicious mixes ever!

006 (1024x683)

3) Put the remaining ingredients into a bowl, before mixing in the sweet potato date combination. Stir well.

013 (1024x683)

4) Place into a lined baking dish and cook for about twenty minutes, until you can pierce the brownie cake with a fork bringing it out dry. Remove the tray and allow it to cool for about ten minutes – this is really important as it needs this time to stick together! Remove the brownies from the tray, leaving it another few minutes before cutting them into squares – then dig in and enjoy!

Chocolate cake with vanilla meringue frosting

This month’s Clandestine Cake club theme was Art Masterpiece and wow were there some beautiful looking cakes! I arrived at Bar 55 in Camden (one of my favourite cocktail bars in London) and at 6.30 on a Monday it was already buzzing. The fact that cocktails are two for one all night on Mondays was probably a big reason for this! As I knew I was going to be scoffing my face with cake I decided before arriving that I wasn’t going to have alcohol- well that pretty much went out the window! As soon as I saw the others with Mai tai’s, Stawberry daiquiri’s and other delicious looking cocktails I knew I had to get one! Fiona, one of the cake club members ordered a beautiful looking raspberry mojito and despite the 50 times or so I have been to Bar 55 I have never had it so opted for one and it was sweet, refreshing and too easy to drink!

We had a table reserved in bar 55 and although a little cramped we managed to all squeeze on and place all our cakes on the tables. There was a chocolate Salvador dali clock cake from Fiona, Jelena’s humungous beautiful chocolate and vanilla cake, mini cheesecakes from Kasia , a rainbow pound cake from Lisa, an almond Picasso cake from Cat and finally an aboriginal chocolate and mango cake from Kristina.
